Weekends in a Year Calculator
Quick presets
Weekends in this year, month by month
| Month | Days | Weekend Days | Full Weekends |
|---|
A weekend that straddles two months (for example, Saturday, January 31 and Sunday, February 1) counts in the year total but in neither month’s full-weekend count, so the Full Weekends column can add up to less than the year total.
Calculation method: a weekend day is any Saturday or Sunday. A full weekend is a Saturday and its following Sunday that both fall inside the period you picked. The calculator counts real calendar days for the exact year or month you enter, so leap years and months that start mid-weekend are handled correctly.
Weekends Month by Month
For the selected year, the table below shows how many weekend days in a year fall in each month, and how many days in a year without weekends remain in that month. The totals match the Whole Year result for the same year. Change the year in the calculator above and both tables update.

The table below uses the same counting for each year from 2025 to 2032.

How many Saturdays in a year?
In 2026, there are 52 Saturdays. Most years have 52 Saturdays, and a year starting on a Saturday has 53 Saturdays. For example, 2022 started on a Saturday and had 53 Saturdays.
How many Sundays in a year?
In 2026, there are 52 Sundays. Most years have 52 Sundays, and a year starting on a Sunday has 53 Sundays.
How weekends are counted at the year boundary: on this page, a weekend means a Saturday-Sunday pair, and a full weekend is counted only when both the Saturday and the following Sunday fall inside the year. The count of weekend days is different: it counts every Saturday and every Sunday in the year, even when the other day of the pair falls outside the year. That is why a year can have 53 Saturdays but only 52 complete Saturday-Sunday pairs wholly inside the year: 2022 had 53 Saturdays but 52 complete pairs, because the 53rd Saturday, 31 December 2022, had its Sunday on 1 January 2023, in the next year.
What the Weekends in a Year Calculator Does
Ask "how many weekends in a year?" and the answer changes with the calendar, because no two years line up the same way. This calculator counts any year or any single month for you: the full weekends (complete Saturday and Sunday pairs), the total weekend days, the Saturdays and Sundays counted separately, and the weeks the period contains. Pick the current month and it also shows how many weekend days have already passed, how many are left, and when the next weekend falls. If you need to count forward in months instead, the Months From Today Calculator does that.
How Many Weekends Are in a Year?
Most years have 52 full weekends and 104 weekend days: 52 Saturdays and 52 Sundays. Both 2026 and 2027 follow this pattern, leaving 261 weekdays in 2026. Some years have one extra weekend day: 2023 had 53 Sundays, giving it 105 weekend days (still 52 full weekends, because the first Sunday of 2023 paired with a Saturday in 2022). The fullest years are leap years that start on a Saturday: they have 53 full weekends and 106 weekend days. 2000 was one, and 2028 is the next. Enter any year in the calculator to see which pattern it follows.
How Many Weeks Are in a Year?
A year has 52 full weeks plus extra days: 1 extra day in a normal year and 2 in a leap year. Those extra days are why one or two weekdays occur 53 times in a year, and why most years hold 52 full weekends while some have 53 Saturdays or 53 Sundays. If you are counting down instead of up, choose the current year in the calculator: the result also shows how many full weeks are left in the year after today, next to the weekend days remaining.
How Many Weekends Are in a Month?
Most months have 4 full weekends and between 8 and 10 weekend days. The exact answer depends on two things: how many days the month has, and which weekday it starts on. A 31-day month that starts on a Friday or a Saturday fits 5 full Saturday-Sunday pairs (May 2026 is one example, with 10 weekend days). The tightest case is a 28-day February that starts on a Sunday, like February 2026: it holds only 3 full pairs, because its first Sunday and its last Saturday pair up with days in the neighbouring months, although it still has 8 weekend days. Switch the calculator to One Month to see the exact breakdown for any month.
How Many Weeks Are in a Month?
Every month contains 4 full weeks plus extra days: a 28-day February is exactly 4 weeks, a 30-day month is 4 weeks and 2 days, and a 31-day month is 4 weeks and 3 days. Averaged across the year, a month is about 4.35 weeks long. If you are counting whole weeks between two specific dates instead, the Weeks Between Dates Calculator measures that gap, and the Weeks From Today Calculator counts weeks forward or backward from today.
How Many Weekdays Are in a Year?
Weekdays are simply the days that are not weekend days: every Monday to Friday. Most years have 261 weekdays (2026 is one: 365 days minus 104 weekend days), and the count only ever ranges from 260 to 262: a leap year with 104 weekend days, like 2024, reaches 262, while a year with 106 weekend days, like 2028, has 260. This is also the exact answer to "how many days are in a year without weekends": the two counts are the same thing. The calculator shows the weekday total for any year in its result rows. Note that public holidays are not deducted here; a working-day count would be lower and depends on the country.
How Weekends Are Counted
This page always shows two numbers, because "weekends" can mean two different things. Weekend days counts every Saturday and Sunday in the period. Full weekends counts only complete Saturday-Sunday pairs that fall entirely inside it. The two disagree whenever a weekend straddles a boundary: Saturday, January 31, 2026 and Sunday, February 1, 2026 form one full weekend, but it belongs fully to neither month, so it appears in the 2026 year total and in neither month's full-weekend count (both months still count their own Saturday or Sunday as a weekend day). For the current month, "weekend days so far" includes today, "weekend days left" counts the Saturdays and Sundays after today, and "full weekends completed" counts pairs whose Sunday has already passed. To count the days between two specific dates instead, use the Days Between Dates Calculator.
How to Use Year Mode and One Month Mode
Whole Year mode answers the year question: type any year from 1000 to 9999 and press Count Weekends to get that year's full weekends, weekend days, Saturdays, Sundays, weekdays and weeks, plus the month-by-month table below the calculator. One Month mode answers the month question: pick a month and a year to get the same breakdown for that single month, including which weekday the month starts on. The quick presets do the same in one tap: This Year and Next Year fill in the year, This Month and Next Month fill in the month, and Current Month jumps straight to the month you are in. Whenever the year or month you pick is the current one, the result adds live rows: weekend days so far (including today), weekend days left after today, full weekends already completed, and the dates of the next weekend, plus the weeks left in the year.
How the Month-by-Month Table Adds Up
The table under the calculator lists all 12 months of the year you entered, with a Year total row at the bottom. The Weekend Days column adds up exactly to the year total: in 2026 the twelve monthly figures (9, 8, 9, 8, 10, 8, 8, 10, 8, 9, 9, 8) sum to 104, because every Saturday and Sunday belongs to exactly one month. The Full Weekends column behaves differently: in 2026 it sums to only 49, not 52. The missing 3 are the weekends that straddle a month boundary inside the year - January 31 to February 1, February 28 to March 1, and October 31 to November 1 - which count in the year total but in no single month's full-weekend count. So 49 plus 3 straddling weekends equals the 52 full weekends of 2026. The Year total row is therefore the number to trust for the whole year; the monthly rows show where each weekend day falls.
Months That Start Mid-Weekend
A month does not always start on a Monday, so its first weekend can be split across the boundary. If a month starts on a Sunday, its opening weekend began the day before: March 2026 starts on Sunday, March 1, so that weekend's Saturday is February 28 - March still counts 5 Sundays but only 4 full pairs, because the March 1 Sunday pairs with a February Saturday. The mirror image is a month that ends on a Saturday: October 2026 ends on Saturday, October 31, so that weekend completes on Sunday, November 1 - October counts 5 Saturdays but only 4 full pairs. A month that starts on a Saturday has no such split: August 2026 starts on Saturday, August 1, so its first pair (August 1 to 2) sits entirely inside the month, and August reaches 5 full pairs and 10 weekend days. This is why a month's Saturday and Sunday counts alone never tell you its full-weekend count: only pairs fully inside the month qualify.
Worked Examples
October 2026: 31 days, starting on a Thursday. It has 5 Saturdays and 4 Sundays, so 9 weekend days and 22 weekdays, and 4 full weekends (October 3 to 4, 10 to 11, 17 to 18, and 24 to 25); the October 31 Saturday pairs with November 1 and is not a full October weekend. In weeks, October 2026 is 4 full weeks plus 3 extra days. August 2026: 31 days, starting on a Saturday. It has 5 Saturdays and 5 Sundays, so 10 weekend days, 21 weekdays, and 5 full weekends - the most any month can hold. The year 2028: a leap year starting on a Saturday, with 366 days, 53 Saturdays and 53 Sundays, so 106 weekend days, 53 full weekends and 260 weekdays. The year 2023: starting on a Sunday, with 53 Sundays but only 52 Saturdays, so 105 weekend days yet still 52 full weekends, because its first Sunday paired with December 31, 2022.
